I love Honolulu. There’s something about it that reminds me of New Orleans, where I lived and worked for a decade. It’s overgrown, hot & humid, unkempt in places. I love that about both cities. It also shares a quirkiness with New Orleans. It’s more subtle. New Orleans tends to wear its freak flag on its sleeve, but you don’t need to look too deep to notice island life has its own unique style. Take personal transportation. The forms and sizes are varied. Personal style expressed via helmets, or not, flip flops, shorts, and even the vehicle themselves.

My trip to London was weird. Something felt off. It was my first visit. I was excited. There were several photo galleries on my list, not the least of which was the Victoria & Albert collection. But when I got there, the photography halls were closed for an installation. This happens, it’s not common, but it happens. But it kept happening when I went to visit various sites. It's not to say there wasn’t plenty to stay entertained and culturally enriched. It was just…off. Or maybe I was. I can’t think of any other way to put it. I didn’t stay still. I never do. I saw lots of neighborhoods. Once I got back in my studio and started editing my images I noticed just how rich and unique each of the neighborhoods was. In retrospect this was the highlight of the trip. Walking the streets without a specific destination. While in London, I kept thinking, is this all there is, what am I missing here? It seemed underwhelming. Since I’ve been away, it’s all I can think about - I can’t wait to revisit. It’s the people, the streets, and the neighborhoods that make a place meaningful. Here’s to my London reminder and to getting back as soon as possible. I promise this time I’ll appreciate all it has to offer.

As a commercial photographer, whenever I get to travel for work I try to schedule a day or two after we wrap to explore and shoot some personal work. It’s a great way to decompress, scratch my travel itch, and continue one of my personal projects. In this case, I stayed on after an industrial shoot in rural Wyoming to discover a state I’d never explored.

Capa Pictures, a Paris photo agency, invited San Diego-based Frank Rogozienski to handle an industrial project for Colas, a French civil engineering firm. This assignment took Frank across several US locations, from expansive highway construction sites in Georgia and rural South Carolina to the tarmac of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The collaboration continued his long-standing relationship with both companies, and the images were added to Colas’ digital asset library for the company to use for marketing, presentations, social media, product catalogs, and other purposes.

I’ve embarked on a new personal project. It’s actually a mashup of an existing project and a new tool in my kit. The new tool is a drone, and the existing project is my Americana series. While I don’t see this as a continuation of that existing body of work, it’s still early days.
I love travel and exploration. When I’m on the road I’m happiest far from the interstates or main thoroughfares. Give me a byway or back road any day. That’s where my Americana series has lived for the better part of 2 decades. The through line to this new body of work is a curiosity of humankind's interaction and imprint on earth's natural landscape.
I’ve been flying as much as possible lately to log hours and practice. Recently, I noticed I’m gravitating to an old familiar subject matter - quirky or unique occasions where humans have inserted their stamp onto the natural landscape.
I’ve noticed this new perspective lends itself to the subject matter I was exploring in my Americana series. It’s different, but I like what I’m seeing so far. There’s something magical that happens as the camera lifts from the ground and the wide expanse opens up. It reminds me of the same feeling of anticipation I’d get in the darkroom as a black and white print would start to emerge in the tray. In both cases, I know generally what’s coming, but that doesn’t diminish the magic of the reveal.
I’m at the point where I want to revisit some of the original locations I shot from the ground. I want to see how the aerial perspective changes the mood or impact of the images.
The aerial perspective has also got me thinking about subjects that didn’t necessarily work from the ground. Urban sprawl is a great example. I always found it difficult to convey this concept from the ground. The image here of Koko Crater on Oahu and the hint of the housing development in the foreground is exactly what I’ve always seen in my mind's eye, but could never convey from a ground perspective.
I think these images are an interesting start to a new phase of this project.

There’s a vibe I like on my sets. I don’t like chaos. I like a well organized low key set. Keep it simple and chill. What does that take to create that kind of set? Pre-production is key, but it’s not the only thing. A good pre-pro anticipates problems before they come up and has solutions in place. It’s pre-visualizing how you want the shoot to unfold and then letting all the hard work on the front end unfold. Of course, problems will arise, or curveballs will be thrown. It’s how you react to those situations that sets the tone. And for me the reaction should be chill. Experience helps. I’ve encountered a lot of adverse conditions that we’ve had to deal with over the years. But for me, the key is to never over react, surround yourself with really good people that are really good at what they do, pre-produce the hell out of it, and then just enjoy another low key, chill shoot.
For some time now I’ve been working to recreate a look I’ve been shooting on film for years. The “look” is from my Yashica Portraits series, shot on film, with a vintage camera. This new approach is all digital. These film characteristics combine a distinct color profile, graininess, and a bit of punch in the shadows. These examples are a great sampling of what I'm working toward. I love how they also retain the intimacy and rawness from the series I was shooting on film.

The pursuit of talent is real. Companies are constantly competing for talent. Tech is notorious for their “perks” to attract talent. Biotech and the Life Sciences, too, have ramped up the incentives to attract and retain great talent. The basics include food and dining options on site, hybrid work and flexible PTO. Another favorite is recreational options. I’ve seen beach volleyball courts and soccer pitches. Gyms are routine. You can tell alot about a company's culture by the benefits and amenities they offer on their campus. This trend has recently extended to the manufacturing sectors. Modern manufacturing is having a moment. Industry is also interested in recruiting and retaining the best skilled blue collar labor available.
My work strives to redefine how traditional blue collar work is perceived and the diverse men and women that do it. I have spent my career creating genuine images of workers in industry, tech, energy and manufacturing, through both commissioned and personal projects. I pride myself in my ability to connect with and project the honor and accomplishment of real people doing real work. No matter what you want to call it, authentic, real, humanistic, personal, approachable, these adjectives all convey the same thing: Real people doing real work, elevated with respect and dignity. This is the way I work.

Biotech and the Life Sciences, too, have ramped up the incentives to attract and retain great talent. The basics include food and dining options on site, hybrid work and flexible PTO. Another favorite is recreational options. I’ve seen beach volleyball courts and soccer pitches. Gyms are routine. You can tell alot about a company's culture by the benefits and amenities they offer on their campus. This trend has recently extended to the manufacturing sectors. Modern manufacturing is having a moment. Industry is also interested in recruiting and retaining the best skilled blue collar labor available.
My work strives to redefine how traditional blue collar work is perceived and the diverse men and women that do it. I have spent my career creating genuine images of workers in industry, tech, energy and manufacturing, through both commissioned and personal projects. I pride myself in my ability to connect with and project the honor and accomplishment of real people doing real work. No matter what you want to call it, authentic, real, humanistic, personal, approachable, these adjectives all convey the same thing: Real people doing real work, elevated with respect and dignity. This is the way I work.

Have you ever had one of those neighbors? Not the one that makes your life miserable, but the other - the one that enriches your life. That was Adam and Taylor. Adam and Taylor were dream neighbors - quiet, respectful, super interesting. Even our dog Duke and their dog Soul were besties. Life is good when you have awesome neighbors. During their time living in the granny flat Adam bought a vintage Italian Vespa. I would occasionally see the 2 of them come and go on the scooter. I loved this romantic vignette of youth. Before they moved, I shot a short video and some portraits to capture their spirit. We miss them already.

An image library, or corporate asset library is a great resource for companies, both large and small. It is indispensable in my business. When done right, a corporate library provides marketing and communications teams with reliable, on brand images, video and graphics as needed. As a corporate photographer with years of experience working with brands to produce assets for their libraries, I work with companies to create both still images and video clips that can be used for various projects on demand.
A corporate library is only as good as the assets. But even with great photos and videos, the library must be easy to navigate and research. So as it grows, a DAM (digital asset management) system is essential.
I recently worked with a client producing and shooting a video for a particular project. Parts of the script relied on events that took place in the past for historical references. For those spots in the video I was given access to their asset library. The library contains video clips, photos, audio and illustrations, even logos and brand guidelines. All assets were keyworded and easily searchable. The library contains in excess of 100K assets, so keyworking and file structure is essential. Anyone that’s set up a DAM system knows how difficult it can be, but also how indispensable it is in the long run. It’s always best to start a DAM before the first assets are acquired. That way structure and hierarchies can be established and adhered to. Once those parameters are in place it’s time to populate the library. As it continues to grow, it will be easily searchable if the folders make sense and assets are keyworded properly. For this particular client I was able to quickly and efficiently determine if they had the necessary assets for the historical references - they did - which saved me tons of research time and saved the client lots of money on both research and having to acquire stock. The final cut was much more dynamic since we used their own assets.

Hybrid video/photo productions are now the norm. That doesn’t mean they’re ideal or easy, but with the right pre-production and communication they can happen seamlessly with great success. I shoot set stills and direct video, so I have a respect for both departments. Coordination between the video and set stills crews is essential for both teams to create great work.
Here are some stills from a shoot I worked on recently as the on set photographer. Respect all around as the video team got what they needed and afforded me the time and space to create my portrait and lifestyle images.
